The Australian Broadcasting Corporation said this was causing a boom in the production of saveloys, a ready-to-eat seasoned red pork sausage which had been dried and smoked.
The Manufacturers Council of PNG told the ABC a combination of the foreign currency shortage and an increase in the price of imported lamb flaps had seen a surge in the local production of saveloys.
The council's chief executive Chey Scovell says overall it's a tough time for his members.
But he says there's not only been an increase in local saveloy production but also an increase in the number of saveloy manufacturers.
