It was announced recently that up to 1500 Pacific islander seasonal workers would be allowed to travel to Victoria, and it is hoped that PNG citizens would be selected for this.

PNG's been largely overlooked in favour of other Pacific countries to supply workers because of its Covid-19 case numbers.

But Dr Chakriya Bowman, a senior adviser with PNG's Labour Mobility movement unit, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's Pacific Beat it was hoped that PNG workers would be considered.

"We've got really strong demand from employers with our new system where we recruit from regional areas, and focus on getting really well trained, well prepared workers. It has been really popular with employers," Bowman said.

She added that measures put in place to prevent Covid transmission would satisfy state health officers in Victoria to enable some New Guineans to form part of the intake.
