Board CEO Dr Nelson Simbiken says that vanilla is grown mainly in Momase, Southern and the New Guinean islands - while certain varieties are being cultivated in the Highlands.

Simbiken said one of the issues facing vanilla production in the country was in terms of quality, but this could be addressed with a review of the PNG Spice Industry Act of 1989.

He said that the Planifolia variety grew well in the highlands, in Eastern Highlands, Chimbu, Jiwaka, Western Highlands.

"The vanilla variety that is growing up there is plentiful and they can get 18cm to 20cm of vanilla beans from that one variety," he said, adding that the Tahitiensis variety suited coastal conditions.
