THE devastating mud volcano in East Java, Indonesia, appears to have been triggered by gas-drilling activities, according to new scientific research.

A torrent of hot mud erupted 200m from the Banjar Panji-1 exploration well during deep drilling on May 29 last year, spewing up to 150,000 cubic meters of sludge per day.
