RAN rescue mission

ROYAL Australian Navy patrol boat HMAS Launceston came to the aid of a Chinese mariner in the Indian Ocean last week.

The Defence Department news release said the evacuation occurred in the afternoon on New Year's day, 80 nautical miles off Christmas Island, with the critically ill sailor brought aboard Launceston, escorted by a member of the crew from the fishing vessel.

Life-sustaining medical aid was provided to the mariner during the return to Christmas Island, who was then transferred to hospital on arrival at Flying Fish Cove.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority requested Launceston's help with the evacuation.
