"The hearts, people and pockets of Morobe are being asked to support our Australian neighbours and allies to stop the bush fires of 2019-2020 and rebuild," the LCCI said.
The chamber noted that as of Monday, 27 lives had been lost along with three volunteer fire fighters. More than 2500 homes had been razed and more than 10.2 million hectare of land, trees and crops destroyed.
"To compare, the whole of PNG has 4.3 million hectares so that would be 20% of PNG burnt - and still burning.
"We can help our neighbour and wantok, who have been a strong partner in forging our nation, providing funding for roads, ANGAU Hospital and many, many other programs.
The appeal fund is the only approved one in Morobe. Chair Sheila Harou and the committee is comprised of various associations volunteers, which includes the LCCI, Rotary Club of Lae-Huon Gulf; Lae Lionesses Club; Lae Lions Club; the Lae chapter of soroptimist International; the Lae chapter of the PNG Australia Alumni Association; the Morobe Provincial Government; and PNG National Agricultural Research Institute.
The committee says that the appeal will run until February 21, with the aim of raising more than K500,000.
