He has been described as one of Morobe Province's most respected leaders who was close to Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare and was a founding member of the Bully Beef Club, which was the name given in the 1960s to young people training to be public servants.

He was the first PNG District Commissioner, first governor under the new reforms, and served as a kiap in the days of self-governance.

Like Somare, Nalau was one of the leaders in Morobe who supported the cause, and campaigned for, PNG independence.

Family member said he died on May 5 at his daughter's home in Lae. He is survived by his six children, 21 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
