SIXTEEN men were shot dead while attempting to escape from a West New Britain’s Lakiemata high-security prison, media outlets in Papua New Guinea reported at the weekend.

One man was injured and a further seven were still reportedly on the run. This was aid by Correctional Services commissioner Stephen Pokanis, who added that the prisoners escaped by cutting down the fence of the prison.
They were caught, and then shot, by Correctional Services.
Pokanis confirmed that a previous breakout occurred in October 2022. He urged to the public and families of the prisoners on the run to surrender them to police.
"Once they are back in prison, they can complete their sentences and go back to their families," he said.
