Established in 1972 the business was initially focussed on industrial engineering and machining through three major workshops, until the demand for complementary products in new markets created an opportunity to diversify.

The establishment of a retail division was the catalyst for the expansion of the business to include products for the engineering, construction, mining, agricultural and transport industry, as well as equipment hire.

Today the company is the largest engineering and industrial supplier in the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea and General Manager, Len Pianta, said the company offered Solomon Island businesses an extensive range of quality products to suit the requirements of the region.

"Our strategy at the beginning of this year was to continue to ensure our staff, stock and service levels were the major points of differentiation between ourselves and our competitors. We have achieved that objective. No-one in the region covers the same extensive range and depth of stock, sales experience or commitment to service," he said.

"With seven industrial branches across Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, Bishops is able to supply all government departments, manufacturing industries, logging companies, mines and primary industries throughout the nation.

"We have a fully stocked 4,000 square metres facility in Honiara and whatever we don't have in the warehouse we can import for a client's needs. We also have a workshop to provide maintenance support and repairs for the products we sell as well as a hose doctor on site to manufacture or repair all types of hydraulic hoses for industry.

"Our warehouse holds a range of quality products including personal protective equipment, power tools, fastening systems, height safety, lifting, welding and industrial hose and fittings. Our philosophy is to grow the relevant market requirements and if we haven't the product in stock that a client wants, then we'll source it through our global procurement service.

"This service gives clients the opportunity to have the product they want delivered from overseas without having the hassle of shopping around, converting currency or dealing with unfamiliar international suppliers.

"Having access to the global also gives you the right products at the right price, saving valuable time and effort.

He added that the Solomon Islands facility had 12 staff based in Honiara, including 11 involved in sales, accounts, a mechanic and a hose doctor to service the needs of our clients.

"We employ and train local staff in all aspects of our business and provide the latest equipment, from upgrading computer systems to international standards, giving our staff the opportunity to learn to work on systems that would not be available in other Solomon Island businesses," Pianta said.

"Bishops prides itself on its corporate social responsibility and corporate governance for best practice in order to operate in the Solomon Islands efficiently and support local sporting initiatives and cultural events."

He pointed out that Bishop's future was in the extensive specialised quality range of products offered to the Solomon Islands market and the company intended to be there for the long run, continuing to develop the business to suit the requirements of the region.

"We currently have more than 50 million PGK worth of stock in PNG and if it is not in one of our branches across PNG and the Solomon Islands, we can source it from anywhere in the world," he added.

"Bishop Brothers also had a growing equipment hire and engineering divisions to meet the needs of multiple companies across PNG and the Solomon Islands, while abiding by the highest international safety standards and offering modern, certified equipment."

The hire division has grown from 40 employees to more than 70 over the past four years to cater for a growing demand.

The division offers a range of equipment including mobile cranes (20t to200t), trucks, trailers, forklifts (2.5t to 7t), load skates (6t to 20t), compaction equipment, cherry picker, concrete equipment, demolition hammers, floor sanders, welding machines, generators, lighting towers, ventilation equipment, pumping equipment, pressure cleaners, construction and engineering equipment.
