Over Saturday and Sunday, more than 180,000 new cases reported globally on each day.
 
There were more than 10,000 deaths over the weekend, the majority in the Americas.
 
Gold futures rose as high as $1766 an ounce on Friday and on Monday traded at nearly $1762/oz.
 
After the horror weekend, spot gold was trading at $1748/oz on Monday and oil was also 2% higher and closed just under $40 a barrel.
