Teaming up with O3B Networks has allowed Digicel to access the former's satellite network to bring online services to people in isolated regions without the associated high costs.

CEO Maurice McCarthy said installing fibre optic cables in remote areas was not cost effective due to the difficult terrain, but expressed optimism for the new technology to provide high-speed and low cost internet.

"The beauty of our partnership with O3B is that we can now provide internet services to rural areas where previously this was contingent on expensive fibre infrastructure or expensive satellite connectivity," he said.

"Teaming with O3B ensures we can continue to provide the most affordable and highest quality internet connectivity."

O3B CEO Steve Collar said the company was created to provide internet connections to places like PNG and that its network of satellites in medium earth orbit can provide coverage to emerging markets.

"The expansion has been rapid and gratifying - but not surprising," he said.
