The National newspaper reports that Prime Minister James Marape told a media conference that while the kina may not be active in the international marketplace, has its own value within PNG.
All global trade was based on the US dollar, but Marape predicts the Chinese yuan will "find its place in the marketplace".
The kina's value would only appreciate if the country exported more, Marape said.
"We need to ramp up our exports so that our kina is competitive in the marketplace," he said, adding that while the kina was not active in the international marketplace, its own place as a credible currency right now.
