It began yesterday and continues to August 13 with the theme of ‘libraries for nation building'.

Uke said that Papua New Guinea had just five public libraries and increasing the country's investment in libraries was crucial for development.

He thanked non-profit organisations like Buk bilong Pikinini for helping to develop a lifelong love of reading among schoolchildren.

Buk bilong Pikini was established in 2007 and has so far set up 11 children's libraries with trained teacher-librarians who are focused on implementing a comprehensive early childhood development programme.

The Book Week launch was sponsored by the Office of Libraries and Archives.
