JGC Corporation of Japan and Hyundai Engineering and Construction of South Korea have been awarded the front-end engineering and design and the EPC contracts for the downstream LNG facilities to be used by Exxon Mobil for the Papua LNG joint venture partners.
JGC says it has been responsible for the construction of more than 30% of the world’s LNG production
JGC says the project calls for the design of about four million tonnes per year of LNG liquefaction capacity adjacent to the existing PNG LNG processing facilities 20km northwest of Port Moresby.
Gas will be sourced from Elk Antelope gas field. The project also includes the use of two million tonnes per year of liquefaction capacity in the existing trains of PNG LNG.
"The LNG facilities will adopt an ‘E-Drive' design, where electric motors instead of conventional gas turbines drive the natural gas compressors. This will help reduce carbon dioxide emissions during operations of the LNG facilities," JGC said.
The JGC group says it has been responsible for the construction of more than 30% of the world's LNG production and is currently working on three large scale LNG production facilities in Canada, Mozambique and Malaysia.
