Another December deadline

THE group of former soldiers which attacked a four-storey complex housing key government offices in Port Moresby earlier this month has given the government a new deadline to come through with outstanding entitlements.

In a rampage on November 1, a mob of ex-soldiers dressed in plain clothes and armed with metal bars smashed glass panels of the Morauta Haus complex and damaged cars and parking lights.

PNG Trade Union Congress president Michael Malabag has been involved in ongoing negotiations and told The National most entitlements had been paid except for housing and hardship allowance.

Of the 1360 ex-servicemen who were retrenched in 2001 under the Morauta government, Malabag reportedly said 82 had died without getting their entitlements.

Former army major Endy Kiak reportedly said the new deadline for the government to clear the air was December 8.

The date is one day ahead of when the Supreme Court is expected to rule on whether the formation of the O'Neill coalition government was constitutional.
