THE potential for the political crisis to trigger acts of violence was evidenced on Friday with two government vehicles torched in Enga provincial capital Wabag.

Villagers from Irelya went on a rampage in the town after hearing rumours that provincial governor Peter Ipatas and Somare-aligned member of parliament Sam Abal were arrested in Port Moresby, according to The National.

They reportedly set fire to a police vehicle from the criminal investigation unit and a provincial government vehicle.

Another car travelling to Kandep was reportedly set on fire and property stolen from Aipus barracks.

The villagers also blocked the road to Wabag and Porgera and reportedly demanded that provincial police commander Martin Lakari withdraw the Mobile Unit 11 from Port Moresby.

PNG remains in political uncertainty since the Supreme Court ruled that Sir Michael Somare instead of Peter O'Neill was the lawful prime minister in a 3:2 decision a week ago.
