Emergency comp heads to the capital

FOLLOWING on from its successful debut in Lae last year, the second National Mining Emergency Response Challenge will reportedly be held by the Porgera Joint Venture in Port Moresby.

According to The National, there will be teams from the Porgera, Ok Tedi, Lihir, Simberi, Sinivit, Tolukuma, and the Ramu NiCo mines in PNG along with a Morobe Mining JV team (50:50 Newcrest Mining and Harmony Gold) plus a team from explorer Niuminco.

Like similar events in other strong mining countries, the teams will test their emergency response and rescue skills under carefully designed scenarios which often force personnel to use fire-fighting equipment and don breathing apparatus.

However, in Australia it is common for such events to be held at a participating mine despite the cost of lost production for a whole day.

Despite years of such exercises, Australian authorities and mining companies typically discover new safety issues through them each year, which can result in improved training programs and procedures.

The NMERC is reportedly organised by the Mineral Resources Authority's mines inspectorate and will take place from September 12-13.
