According to The National, this merger and a recent defection by People's Movement for Change Party's Moresby Northwest member, Labi Amaiu, to PNC, gives this party 40 seats of PNG's 111-seat parliament.

Prime Minister and PNC leader Peter O'Neill reportedly said PP leader and Enga governor Peter Ipatas made a "selfless decision" to merge with the PNC in the best interest for PNG and political stability.

Amaiu's resignation left the PMC with just one seat, that of its outspoken leader and Northern (Oro) province governor Gary Juffa.
