Key bureaucrat killed

A senior Finance Department bureaucrat was reportedly stabbed to death in Port Moresby over the weekend.

According to The National, 43-year-old first assistant secretary Philip Imbuni was attacked in the carpark of a popular nightclub in Waigani on Saturday morning and later died from stab wounds at his East Boroko home.

Imbuni was reportedly the head of the Finance Department's non-tax revenue division "tasked with the responsibility of collecting government fees and charges".

A department spokesman reportedly expressed condolences to his wife and his six children and urged police to investigate the matter thoroughly.

"Once again, we have lost at the hands of cowards a Papua New Guinean at the prime of his career who would have otherwise lived on to contribute meaningfully to the development of our country through his work at the Department of Finance," the spokesman told the newspaper.
