According to various reports, the group was armed with melee weapons and firearms when they broke down the hospital gates and started attacking students, with a dental student being seriously injured.

The incident reportedly occurred only a few hours before Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd arrived in the capital for a 24-hour visit.

Acting Police Commissioner Simon Kauba said the attack would be thoroughly investigated, according to Radio New Zealand.

Some reports suggest the tensions between the students and the troops stemmed from an incident where a soldier cut a queue to use an ATM outside the hospital.
