Manus Island resistance

THE Australian government’s PNG solution for asylum seeker issues is facing local resistance as Manus Island landowners have reportedly blocked access to its detention centre in Papua New Guinea.

According to ABC News, the landowners blocked access to the naval base where the detention centre is located and also stopped the facility using the local rubbish dump.

The landowners reportedly claimed they were being prevented from providing services and labour to the centre, in contrast to previously made commitments.

Manus Island MP Ronny Knight reportedly said he wanted the naval base closed until the end of Australia's election (September 7).

The Australian government sent more than 40 asylum seekers to the 600-capacity facility last week - the 12th group since the PNG solution was struck.

At this stage the 600-capacity and yet to be expanded Manus Island facility has not been too overburdened with refugees who sought asylum from Australia.
