New ship for PNG

A HEAVY landing craft was commissioned into the Papua New Guinea Defence Force on Friday in Port Moresby.

HMPNGS Lakekamu, formerly the Australian navy's HMAS Labuan, was gifted to PNG after being decommissioned in Cairns last month. It then sailed to Port Moresby under a joint Australian-PNG crew.

The ship will be used as a training vessel by the PNG Defence Force and will focus on developing mariner skills and a seaworthy culture in the Defence Force's Maritime Element.

HMPNGS Lakekamu is named after the Lakekamu River in PNG's Gulf province and is the first PNG Defence Force vessel to bear this name.
