Husband Nanny Huhume confirmed this to news service Loop PNG, saying that Mrs Huhume died around 2pm in the intensive care unit.

Her body remains at the hospital while other details have yet to be made available by family. Huhume, from Meii Village, Gulf Province, was admitted to ICU last week, where she remained on life support.

Huhume was just 15 years old in 1971 when she created the design that became Papua New Guinea's national flag when it gained independence four years later.
