Marape said: "It should be a concern to all consumers of mainstream news when reporters peddle fake news such as this! And it further baffles me when mainstream news source news from social media without verification.

"I am alive and well, been to work all week long including Central Province breakfast this morning and I am not holed up in Airways hotel as splashed [on Twitter].

"Mainstream news reporters please maintain your decorum and dignity, don't fall into the pitfalls of fake news peddling so common in social media," Marape said.

Reporter Ben Packham tweeted on February 18 that: "I'm hearing PM James Marape is in isolation with suspected Covid-19 infection."

In another tweet, the reporter said: "Marape, his bodyguard and three to four ministers are being quarantined at Port Moresby's Airways Hotel. Earlier this week, he said on Facebook he had been down with a fever."
