The new grant will go towards building a new maternity ward with upgraded electricity, water and sewerage systems at the Vanimo General Hospital. A Family Support Centre will be built at the Raihu District Hospital in Aitape.

Australian High Commissioner Bruce Davis made the announcement with West Sepik Governor Tony Wouwou during his visit to the province with Police Minister Jelta Wong and Immigration Minister Petrus Thomas.

The High Commission says the new electricity, water and sewerage upgrades will improve health and safety at the Vanimo Hospital while the new maternity ward will improve maternal and newborn care.

The Family Support Centre at Raihu Hospital will provide improved access to and quality of services to survivors of family and sexual violence in rural areas.

"This builds on previous Australian Government support for infrastructure upgrades at Vanimo General Hospital," Davis said.
