Flights will initially operate only on Wednesdays, "opening new opportunities to bring freight and essential travellers to and from Port Moresby through Hong Kong".

Air Niugini says this freight would include the export of live crabs, lobsters and other products from Papua New Guinea to the Asian markets.

The codeshare with Cathay Pacific, as well as an agreement with Air France, will allow passengers to transfer between flights in Hong Kong from mainland China, the rest of Asia, and worldwide.

Air Niugini CEO Bruce Alabaster said that with Singapore still effectively closed, passengers could find connecting flights elsewhere in Hong Kong.

Air Niugini said it had the ability to increase Hong Kong services to five days a week as demand for international travel recovered from next year.
