Towe replaces former chief commissioner Ray Paul, who held the position for eight years.

Customs Service director Donny Kowuropa said Paul had achieved the development of a corporate plan, enabling Customs Services to transform and modernise business processes to international best practice standards.

"With the introduced security facilities we have at the borders, it has enabled us to detect a great number of undeclared smuggled goods, tobacco and contraband from entering the country. This has also assisted with increased revenue," he said.

Towe said he would carry on the duties of his predecessor but would like to see more emphasis spent on improving compliance.
