Oil was spilled on to the tarmac along with broken bottles strewn on sections of the runway.

National Airports Corporation MD Rex Kiponge has condemned this incident and said that NAC, together with police, will conduct a full investigation including an assessment of the damage caused.

"I am very disappointed and strongly condemn these actions which are caused by a few people who are holding the rest of the travelling public at ransom because of their senseless actions," Kiponge said.

Air Niugini management said: "The airline only resumed operations to Wapenamanda 12 months ago in July 2021, after the NAC and government spent millions of kina improving the runway and terminal infrastructure.  The vandalism which occurred overnight shows a complete disregard for public property and facilities and is completely unacceptable."

Air Niugini had been operating five weekly services to Wapenamanda using Dash8 aircraft.
