THE unreliability of electricity and water supply in Port Moresby has forced many businesses to have back-up plans to support the continuation of trading.
This is the view of the Port Moresby Chamber of Commerce and Industry, with president Rio Fiocco saying an alternative water source would be good for business houses and the city residents, The National newspaper reported.
"Most business premises have back-up water and power here in National Capital District because of the unreliability of supply of both," he said.
"Right now, I am not aware of any (supply) issues affecting businesses. As the city grows in population, an alternative water supply makes good business sense.
"It would be good if Water PNG plans now to bring to Port Moresby an alternative water source, so that it can be built to supply the city in two to three years' time."
He said one likely source of water supply would be the Edevu Dam scheduled to be commissioned.
State-owned utility company Water PNG had recently issued notices about the low supply or shutdown in the water supply to some parts of Port Moresby.
