Feakes was most recently high commissioner to Kenya. He has served overseas in Lebanon, Jordan, Afghanistan, Papua New Guinea and the US. His latest appointment takes effect from November this year.
The Department of Foreign Affairs said that in Canberra, Feakes had held a range of senior positions over many years.
Australia is Fiji's largest bilateral aid donor, budgeting $A76.9 million in development assistance in 2016 and 2017.
