Australian Pacific Minister Concetta Fierravanti-Wells attended the commemoration ceremony, an event which represented a turning point in the Pacific campaign during the Second World War.

Royal Australian Navy ships provided vital support to Allied troops during the liberation of Guadalcanal from Japanese forces.

The Coastwatchers network, comprising Australians, New Zealanders and Solomon Islanders, provided the Allied forces with essential intelligence on Japanese positions at great personal risk.

While in the Solomons, Fierravanti-Wells said she would also be meeting with Solomon Island government representatives "to discuss ways the Pacific can further enhance present-day regional security collaboration, following the successful conclusion of the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands on June 30 this year".
