The date was approved 38 votes to 14, Radio NZ reported.

Voting will be restricted to long-term residents.

According to the 1998 Noumea Accord the vote on New Caledonia's sovereignty has to be held by 2018.

The last move for independence in 1987 resulted in a landslide 98% win to stay with France, but the outcome can be attributed to a planned boycott by the pro-independence movement.
