This was said by Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison when he addressed the University of the South Pacific in Suva at the end of last week.

The office will be headed up by Ewen McDonald, who is currently High Commissioner of New Zealand, which has accreditation also to the Cook Islands and Niue.

"Mr McDonald has engaged closely with Pacific counterparts on foreign policy, development and humanitarian issues and has worked hard to ensure Pacific perspectives are heard in international bodies, including the UN.

"He will build on this even further in his new position. I commend you on this appointment and I thank you very much for taking up the role," Morrison told McDonald, who was present when the announcement was made.
