THE first unit of the Sarulla geothermal power plant in Tapanuli, North Sumatra, owned by energy firm Medco Energi International has started commercial operation.

The unit, which began to operate last week, will be followed by two more, the company said. Together they will be able to produce 330 megawatts of power.
 
"The second phase and third, each with the capacity of 110 megawatts, are scheduled to start commercial operation in 2017 and 2018," the Arifin Panigoro-controlled Medco Energi said.
