OK TEDI Mining says it has earned a ‘certificate of responsible disposal’ for the disposal of 1095kg of mixed refrigerant gases to an Australian-based facility approved by the PNG Conservation and Environment Protection Authority.

The company says refrigerant gas is an ozone depleting substance, and while PNG is yet to establish a national strategy for the proper destruction of the gas, Ok Tedi believes it is the first in PNG to achieve this.
 
Ok Tedi waste manager Dexter Wagambie said it was a challenge, but "our CEPA National Ozone Unit team was extremely helpful with the permits process" and deserved praise for their support.
