According to the New Straits Times the accident occurred about 152 miles from the nation's Kerteh Beach about 11pm local time on Saturday.

"It was learnt the victims, a mechanic and an electrician, were carrying out a routine inspection on the ship when the safety harness attached to a lifeboat broke, causing both to fall to the ship's deck," it reported.

"Following the result of the port mortem, we have ruled out foul play and classified the case as sudden death," District police chief superintendent Che Suza Che Hitam said the following day.

The Star Online reported that the victims, Valentine Girak, 31 and Gabriel Lembang, 29, were both from Sarawak.

This report claimed the men were inspecting a safety boat when it suddenly fell into the sea.

Both reports said the men died from head injuries.

The company behind the drilling was not revealed.
