The independent seismic contractor teamed up with geophysical firm BGP for the 3683km frontier survey over the underexplored Cape Vogel and Bougainville Basins as well as the unexplored New Ireland Basin.

The survey was conducted using the BGP Explorer.

Searcher global sales manager Rachel Masters said the survey followed the recent spark in activity offshore the Gulf of Papua, off the southern coast, where modern broadband processing techniques unveiled fresh potential in the area.

"Given the complex tectonic history of the basins the Solomon Sea 2D covers, and industry's continued interest in the region, Searcher is excited to uncover the potential of northern PNG," Masters said.

Searcher said fast track pre-stack time migration data would be made available by December, with the final pre-stack depth migration data expected in early 2018.

A regional study incorporating both existing and new data will be complete in June 2018.

According to the company, the survey expands Searcher's 2D seismic coverage offshore Papua New Guinea to about 80,000km.

The company also started a 3D reprocessing project off PNG back in January, and expects the results from that work in the third quarter of 2017.
