In addition to his time as prime minister, Sir Rabbie has experience in the portfolios of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Treasury, Primary Industry, Petroleum and Energy and other areas of government responsibility.

In the private sector, Sir Rabbie holds directorships with other PNG companies, including a chairman role with Kina Asset Management.

While Bougainville Copper is focused on trying to reopen the Panguna mine, the company told PNGIndustryNews.net that the appointment wasn't with an eye to speeding up the process.

While he will be part of that process, the company said it had been on the lookout for a person with Sir Rabbie's cachet for quite a while, as his contacts within the PNG government business experience in the nation would prove quite fruitful to Bougainville Copper.
