Bougainville human rights claim to be heard in US

A HUMAN rights claim against resources giant Rio Tinto regarding its role in the period of violent and civil unrest on the island of Bougainville following the collapse of its massive Panguna copper-gold mine in the early 1990s, has been reinstated in the United States.

The claim was originally brought by Bougainville islanders in 2000 and claims that Rio Tinto, through subsidiary Bougainville Copper, conspired with the PNG Government to help “quell” civil resistance
