The miner said the quake was several hundred kilometres east of Gold Ridge when it struck at 12.12pm local time.

"The earthquake did not affect St Barbara's operations at Gold Ridge," St Barbara said.

"The company expresses its sympathies and condolences to the villages and families impacted by the tsunami which followed the earthquake."
