Nautilus said the order secured the main engines, azimuth and tunnel thrusters to be used on the vessel and that it was the first major package to be awarded by the Chinese shipbuilding firm.

"We are excited to see the first order being placed for this high specification machinery as we work towards the completion of our first vessel," Nautilus CEO Mike Johnston said.

Once completed, it will serve as the operational base to extract and transport high grade copper and gold ore from Papua New Guinea's Bismarck Sea.

The vessel will be 227m long and 20m wide, and generate about 31MW of power. There will be accommodation for up to 180 people, with the mining equipment being installed during the building of the vessel. Delivery is expected towards the end of 2017.
