The quake registered 7.6 at a depth of 33km and the US Geological Survey also recorded three others registering at 5.7, 5.0 and 4.8 south and southwest of Taron, PNG.
The centre's initial alert indicated potential hazardous waves to impact areas 1000km along the coast of PNG and the Solomon Islands, with a follow up warning suggesting waves of three to 10m.
However, the centre's final notice said the threat had largely abated, but warned people to remain observant and exercise normal caution near coastal areas.
